Delicious braised pork belly

INGREDIENTS

  • Steamed bao buns
  • 1 lb sliced pork belly
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 5 garlic cloves, smashed
  • 3 slices ginger
  • 2 green onions
  • 3 cups water

SAUCE:

  • 3 tbsp Shaoxing wine
  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 star anise

OPTIONAL toppings:

  • Shallots
  • Crushed peanuts
  • Chopped cilantro
You only need a few ingredients to braise the pork belly!

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Heat a large pan over high heat and add oil.
  • Sear pork belly slices for a couple of minutes on both sides and set aside.
  • In the same pan, sauté garlic, green onions, and ginger.
  • Mix in Shaoxing wine, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, star anise, and brown sugar.
  • Return pork belly to the pan and pour in water.
  • Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer, covering with a lid.
  • Halfway through, flip the pork belly and continue to braise for about 1 hour.
  • Remove pork belly and let the sauce thicken on medium-high heat for around 15 minutes.
  • Slice pork belly into 3-inch pieces and immerse in the reduced sauce.
  • Steam the bao buns.
  • Assemble the buns with 2-3 slices of pork belly, drizzle sauce, and top with cilantro.
