INGREDIENTS

  • 4 extra firm or hard tofu , cut into 0.5″ slices
  • 2 tbsp sweet potato starch or all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 egg , whisked
  • 4 tbsp white sesame seeds
  • 4 tbsp black sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp canola/vegetable oil
  • 1 green onion , finely sliced (for garnish)

Teriyaki Sauce

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp cooking sake
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Prepare the Tofu:
    • Pat 4 slices of extra firm tofu (cut into 0.5-inch slices) dry with paper towels. Sprinkle each side with 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

  • Set Up the Coating Station:
    • Place 2 tablespoons of sweet potato starch or all-purpose flour in one bowl.
    • In a second bowl, whisk 1 egg.
    • In a third bowl, combine 4 tablespoons white sesame seeds and 4 tablespoons black sesame seeds.

  • Coat the Tofu:
    • Press each tofu slice into the flour, shaking off excess.
    • Dip the tofu slice into the whisked egg, letting any excess drip off.
    • Press the tofu into the sesame seed mixture, ensuring all sides are evenly coated.
  • Cook the Tofu:
    • Heat 2 tablespoons of canola or vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Place the sesame-coated tofu slices in the skillet and cook for 1.5 minutes until the sesame seeds become nutty and crispy.
    • Carefully turn the tofu slices and cook the other side for another 1.5 minutes.
    • Use tongs to prop the tofu slices on their sides to sear the edges until crisp, about 30 seconds on each side.
    • Remove the tofu and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  • Prepare the Teriyaki Sauce:
    • In the same skillet, lower the heat to medium and add 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons mirin, 2 tablespoons cooking sake, 2 tablespoons water, and 1 tablespoon sugar.
    • Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring continuously until the sugar is dissolved.
    • Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 10-15 minutes until the sauce thickens.
    • When small bubbles rise to the surface and the sauce coats the back of a spoon, it is ready.
  • Serve:
    • Place the crispy tofu slices on a serving plate.
    • Spoon the teriyaki sauce over the tofu, ensuring even coverage.
    • Garnish with finely sliced green onion and minced garlic if desired.

Additional Tips:

  • Serve the tofu over rice or alongside steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
  • For added flavor, sprinkle with additional sesame seeds or a drizzle of sesame oil.

Enjoy! ♡
